Shaping the Future of Nursing Education
Shaping the Future of Nursing Education
Nursing education in Aotearoa is continuously evolving—and with it, the opportunity to create lasting, meaningful change. Manaaki Tangata & Associates is a Rotorua-based company committed to empowering nurse educators to lead this transformation through culturally responsive and reflective teaching. Our approach is grounded in tikanga Māori and guided by the principles of Pātuitanga (partnership), Tino Rangatiratanga (self-determination), Mana Taurite (equity), Whakamarumarutia (protection), and Kōwhiringa (choice). Through focused workforce development and capability building, we support educators and institutions to deliver nursing education that is equitable, impactful, and grounded in mātauranga Māori. Together, we are shaping a future where all voices are valued, all learners are supported, and nursing education becomes a powerful force for equity and transformation.
Manaakitanga represents a deep commitment to care, respect, and the nurturing of meaningful, reciprocal relationships. At Manaaki Tangata & Associates, we are here to support nurse educators and the nursing profession to deliver education and healthcare that truly embodies the principles of manaakitanga—fostering positive, respectful, and empowering engagement with learners and communities. Nurse educators have the power to lead this change—championing a model of nursing education grounded in compassion, cultural integrity, and transformative impact.
Whanaungatanga is a foundational Māori value that sits at the heart of meaningful teaching and learning. Rooted in connection, kinship, and shared purpose, whanaungatanga emphasises the importance of building genuine, respectful relationships that create space for trust, collaboration, and collective growth. In nursing education, whanaungatanga is not just a value—it is a powerful practice that transforms how we engage with learners. At Manaaki Tangata & Associates, we are committed to supporting nurse educators to embed mātauranga Māori and place whanaungatanga at the centre of their teaching. When educators lead with whanaungatanga, they create culturally grounded, inclusive learning environments that uplift learners and strengthen the future of nursing in Aotearoa.
Testimonials
"Through Tracy’s knowledge and expertise I have been fortunate enough to learn how to apply culturally safe nursing care. Tracy's professionalism and experience has led her to deliver an exceptional Te Tiriti o Waitangi course. I have undoubtedly had beautiful experiences when applying Te Tiriti because of the mātauranga I have been taught by Tracy. From a simple “Kia ora” to acknowledging and uplifting a patients wairua by supporting them to be exactly who they are." - Te Au Waaka
"Ko Moana Tapsell tōku ingoa. I am a year 2 nursing student at Toi Ohomai Te Pūkenga Mokoia Campus. I had the privilege of having Tracy Narbey as my kaiako in the 1st year of my nursing studies. Tracy has an intense enthusiasm and passion for her work and she has a unique way of teaching mātauranga Māori and the importance of tikanga Māori and learning about Te Tiriti o Waitangi articles in practice for nursing students. The class wānanga, and education I have gained has been a real awakening for myself and very helpful as I continue on in my studies."
"We requested Tracy’s services to help us implement our chosen Māori health model into our practice. Tracy delivered a two-part education session on mātauranga Māori to our staff members in December 2022. In these sessions, she explained Te Whare Tapa Wha model and discussed how the four dimensions can be used for clinical assessment. Her advice, expertise, and skill helped us to develop tools to gather information from patients to maintain a holistic approach to health care. With her clinical knowledge, she shared examples that were relevant to our practice. We were able to relate to her examples through our own experiences. Tracy creates a safe environment for open discussion and makes you feel comfortable to reflect on your own practice. From Tracy's session with us, we gained the ability to deliver culturally safe care by developing an awareness of health equity. She helped us to recognize the impact of healthcare on consumers and how to protect the consumer's well-being while maintaining cultural safety. She inspired us to develop our practice and knowledge about mātauranga Māori." - Central Day Stay Theatre, Rotorua Eye Clinic
"Whaea Tracy's impact on my life has helped me comfortably express my identity as wahine Māori. To be a proud wahine Māori was a term that had become foreign, as opportunities to embrace my heritage and self always felt estranged. Having a space where it was safe to learn, make mistakes, and away from judging minds has allowed me to feel heard and as if I mattered. I would love to thank Tracy for being a refuge of trust and not being bias when I was most vulnerable." - Te Mamaeroa Rawinia Rangirererua
